The 99% #OWS #N17 EPIC MOMENT

One of the most impressive moments of yesterday's Occupy Wall Street marches, was when someone projected a giant 99% "bat signal" on the side of one of lower Manhattan's skyscrapers as thousands of people swarmed across the nearby Brooklyn Bridge. New Yorkers know the Verizon Building as the windowless, concrete eyesore that looms over the bridge and mars the downtown skyline, so seeing it used is such a way certainly got a lot of attention. But who did it? And how were they able to project the stories-high words on the building just as the protesters made their way over the span? Boing Boing's Xeni Jardin spoke to Mark Read, one of the Occupy Wall Street organizer who pulled together a team of friends and artists that arranged for the projection to happen.I Read says he got help from two video projection artists, Max Nova and JR Skola, who used a 12000 lumen projector and programmed the software needed to properly program the message. He also found an apartment in a nearby housing project from where they safely angle the projection on to the building. He says he offered to rent the apartment from a single mother of three, but when she found out what they wanted to use it for — and saw what happened during the eviction of Zuccotti Park — she refused to take their money.

N17 Pepperspray Deployment - Portland Police
This information is in regard to a specific confrontation that occurred during the 12-hour N17 protest that occurred on Thursday, November 17, 2011. Around 4:30 pm, Portland Police Officers were attempting to remove people from Southwest Yamhill Street so that vehicular traffic and light-rail traffic could resume. Many people were in the street in what was a very dangerous situation. At the same time, officers were also preventing any additional people from entering the Chase Bank, located on the corner of 6th and Yamhill. Police were inside the bank arresting individuals who had entered the bank to protest. Police made repeated loud-hail commands and officers on the ground reiterated those commands for people to clear the street and leave the area. A confrontation occurred between a group of protestors who would not disperse. Projectiles were thrown at police and an unidentified man struck a police horse. During this confrontation, police deployed pepper spray on 20-year-old Elizabeth Evon Nichols. Nichols had been told by police repeatedly to disperse. Immediately following the pepper spray, officers applied water to Nichols' face. She was then arrested for Disorderly Conduct and Interfering with a Police Officer. Nichols was also arrested by the Federal Protective Service (FPS) previously on Sunday November 13, after police removed her from a cement block in which she was chained during the clearing of Terry Schrunk Plaza. On this two month anniversary of Occupy Wall Street, we'll take a look at how protests across the country are carrying on their message. Occupy DC left their camp at McPherson square and headed towards the Key Bridge in Georgetown. In Portland, protesters not only occupied banks and other financial institutions but 400 people gathered at the end of the Steel Bridge, which has already been shut down to all traffic, except buses and commuter rails. In Los Angeles people gathered at 7am to march. At UC Berkeley, demonstrators' new camp at was raided.

Occupy Portland, N17: Riot forces with no badges/nametags refuse identify themselves
Unnamed, non-badge-wearing forces in riot gear (ie armor) storm SW 6th Avenue at Pioneer Square in Portland in a purported effort to prevent protesters (notably peaceful and on the sidewalk the whole time) from obstructing traffic. After obstructing traffic themselves for some time (and refusing to identify themselves), forces retreat, at which point protesters re-take the street and mindfully let Trimet buses through. On the far side of the street, one protester is removed via ambulance, and though not apparent in this video, there are verified reports that pepper spray was used on peaceful protesters within the square before the forces retreated.
