Colony cage footage shot in New Zealand 2012
This is covertly filmed footage taken by animal activists at Mainland Poultry's main operation north of Dunedin. Tens of thousands of hens are cramped inside a new type of battery cage, called a 'colony cage'. These new cages are being touted by the egg industry as a suitable alternative to conventional battery cages and are expected to gain the approval of the Minister for Primary Industries, David Carter. Ex-battery hens see grass for the 1st time!
We collected 56 rescued battery hens from the Battery Hen Welfare Trust in Chulmleigh, Devon on the 29th Dec 2011. 3 days before battery cages became illegal in favour of the still horrific 'enriched' battery cages. The girls will now live out their lives free ranging Stock Wood Farm to their hearts contents!

Rescue 140: Giving Hens a Second Chance at Life
Late last month, the CETFA Rescue Crew organized and rescued 140 battery-caged hens who were destined for slaughter. The hens had spent over a year crammed into battery cages - barren wire cages so small they couldn't even spread their wings. The hens were given a second chance at life and are now able to stretch their wings and legs, have dustbaths, preen and feel the sun on their backs and the grass beneath their feet. Members of the CETFA Rescue Crew who made it happen are Anne, Danae, Deanna, Henk, Jennifer, Meaghan, Olivier, RJ, Sarah, Shannon and Tommy. On behalf of the hens, thank you all! Mercy For Animals - Ohio Fresh Eggs Investigation
Between August 2001 and November 2004, members of the non-profit Ohio animal advocacy organization Mercy For Animals have conducted four undercover investigations of Ohio's largest egg factory farms. At every facility investigated, MFA found severe overcrowding and confinement, countless sick and injured hens, hens who had become trapped in the wire of their cages, and dead birds left to slowly rot and decompose next to birds still producing eggs for human consumption. The cruel conditions illustrated on their website are not isolated incidents. Sadly, similar abuses run rampant on factory farms across the country. The abuses stem from a system in which living, feeling animals are regarded as mere property, commodities to be exploited for every last penny. The most important thing you can do to stop the suffering of these animals is to stop eating eggs and other animal products.
