When Ireland Starved Episode 1 Causes of Poverty (Part 1 of 3)
The Great Famine was a period of great starvation, disease and emigration in Ireland between 1845 and 1852 during which the islands population dropped by 20-25 percent. Approximately one million people died and a million more emigrated from Ireland. The proximate cause of famine was a potato disease commonly known as potato blight. Although blight ravaged potato crops throughout Europe during the 1840s the impact and human cost in Ireland where a third of the population was entirely dependent on the potato for food was exacerbated by a host of political, social, and economic factors which remain the subject of historical debate. The famine was a watershed in the history of Ireland. Its effects permanently changed the islands demographic, political and cultural landscape. For both the native Irish and those in the resulting diaspora, the famine entered folk memory and became a rallying point for various nationalist movements.

As the principal of the school says "everything is a challenge", from physical ailments caused by famine to having to "unlearn" a lifetime's worth of indoctrination. Many fled because the famine proved too much to bear. Around 80% have seen close relatives starve. The school does what it can to help these people adjust but the "culture shock" as the school's Director describes it, is "vast". Peter Jones wrote the words based on letters found in a relative's attic from a father in Ireland to his son, John Hunt, in the United States. The father writes of the terrible conditions in Ireland between the years 1845 and 1852 during and following the potato blight that caused starvation and disease in the rural areas of the country. More than a million people died in the famine and more than a million emigrated. Most of those who left Ireland never returned. We have no knowledge of what John Hunt wrote back to his father. While life was easier in the United States than in the Ireland during the famine years, it was still difficult. Irish immigrants struggled for acceptance.
