Pergolesi - Stabat Mater in F Minor - Mov. 1-3/12
GIOVANNI BATTISTA PERGOLESI (1710-1736) "Stabat Mater" for soprano, alto, strings and basso continuo in F minor (original version) 1. Stabat Mater dolorosa - Grave [a due] 2. Cujus animam gementem - Andante amoroso [canto solo] 3. O quam tristis - Larghetto [a due] Performed by Concerto Italiano Featuring Gemma Bertagnolli, soprano Sara Mingardo, contralto Conducted by Rinaldo Alessandrini *Pergolesi was commisioned in 1734 by the Cavalieri della Vergine dei Dolori to write a new Stabat Mater to replace the now unfashionable one written by Alessandro Scarlatti for the Cavalieri. Pergolesi finished it only a few days before his death. The Stabat Mater became famous throughout Europe and became a symbol of the perfection and universality of the Italian style. Bach even paid homage to it in his motet "Tilge, Hochster, meine Sunden".

Stabat Mater
Boccherini's Stabat Mater G 532 (1781) Sophie Karthäuser (soprano) Les Folies Françaises Dir.: Patrick Cohën-Akenine At the Cross her station keeping, stood the mournful Mother weeping, close to Jesus to the last. Through her heart, His sorrow sharing, all His bitter anguish bearing, now at length the sword has passed. O how sad and sore distressed was that Mother, highly blest, of the sole-begotten One. Christ above in torment hangs, she beneath beholds the pangs of her dying glorious Son. Is there one who would not weep, whelmed in miseries so deep, Christ's dear Mother to behold? By the Cross with thee to stay, there with thee to weep and pray, is all I ask of thee to give. For the sins of His own nation, She saw Jesus wracked with torment, All with scourges rent: She beheld her tender Child, Saw Him hang in desolation, Till His spirit forth He sent. Can the human heart refrain from partaking in her pain, in that Mother's pain untold? O thou Mother! fount of love! Touch my spirit from above, make my heart with thine accord: Make me feel as thou hast felt; make my soul to glow and melt with the love of Christ my Lord. Holy Mother! pierce me through, in my heart each wound renew of my Savior crucified: Let me share with thee His pain, who for all my sins was slain, who for me in torments died. Let me mingle tears with thee, mourning Him who mourned for me, all the days that I may live: Let me, to my latest breath, in my body bear the death of that dying Son of thine ...

Philippe Jaroussky - Stabat Mater. Antonio Vivaldi (part 1)
Antonio Vivaldi. Stabat Mater. Philippe Jaroussky, Jean-Christophe Spinosi and Ensemble Matheus. Festival du Haut Jura 9 June 2007 "In February 1711, Vivaldi and his father went to Brescia, where his setting of the Stabat Mater (RV 621) was played as part of a religious festival. The work seems to have been written in haste: the string parts are simple, the music of the first three movements is repeated in the next three, and not all the text is set. " English translations At the Cross her station keeping, stood the mournful Mother weeping, close to Jesus to the last. Is there one who would not weep, whelmed in miseries so deep, Christ's dear Mother to behold?... Anna Netrebko: "Stabat Mater" (Music Clips)
www.deutschegrammophon.com Watch Anna Netrebko and Maria Pizzolato sing exerpts from their new album. "Stabat Mater" with Anna Netrebko which reveals her admiration for Pergolesi and her love for his Stabat Mater. The music was recorded at Netrebko's July 2010 Baden-Baden concert where she was joined by the beautifully schooled tones of Marianna Pizzolato's mezzo voice and the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia under Antonio Pappano. Besides "Stabat mater", one of classical music's most popular works, the album includes a secular cantatas for soprano "Nel chiuso centro" and "Questo è il piano, also a secular cantata for alto and strings. Both cantatas add a special touch to this album being released in Spring 2011. Pergolesi: Stabat Mater (Emma Kirkby, James Bowman)
Disclaimer: I do not own this! The Stabat Mater, centuries old, is a Latin poem often set to music. It is Pergolesi's Stabat Mater (1736), for soprano, alto, and orchestra, which is his best known sacred work. It was commissioned by the Confraternità dei Cavalieri di San Luigi di Palazzo (the monks of the brotherhood of San Luigi di Palazzo) as a replacement for the rather old-fashioned one by Alessandro Scarlatti for identical forces which had been performed each Good Friday in Naples. Whilst classical in scope, the opening section of the setting demonstrates Pergolesi's mastery of the Italian baroque 'durezze e ligature' style, characterized by numerous suspensions over a faster, conjunct bassline. The work remained popular, becoming the most frequently printed work of the 18th century, and being arranged by a number of other composers, including Johann Sebastian Bach, who used it as the basis for his psalm Tilge, Höchster, meine Sünden, BWV 1083. Bach: Tilge, Höchster, Meine Sünden, BWV 1083 www.youtube.com Latin Stabat Mater dolorosa Iuxta crucem lacrimosa Dum pendebat filius.
